Does Flour + Water Live Up to the Hype?

When I asked my friends for San Francisco restaurant recommendations, more than one person suggested Flour + Water. To be honest, I’d never heard of it, but after looking at their website and reading reviews, I thought it sounded like a great dinner option for my husband and me.

I’d read about the fact that it can get very busy and that reservations are recommended. Since we didn’t have our daughter with us, we decided to give it a try even though we might have to wait a couple hours to eat. When we stepped out of our cab, we thought we had it made. There didn’t seem to be many people waiting by the hostess stand. It turned out there was a three hour wait…everyone had gone down the street to grab a drink at a nearby bar. The hostess told us to check back after an hour or so. Sure enough, we came back and were seated after about 90 minutes of total wait time. (We went on a Saturday night, by the way.)

One thing that stood out to me immediately was that despite all of the hype, this is a very unpretentious restaurant. I love that. I don’t like places that are formal, where you feel like the servers are hovering over you. Our waiter was very friendly and helped me decide what to order.

Flour + Water specializes in pasta and pizza. The pasta servings are fairly small, so our waiter recommended that my husband and I share two pasta dishes and a pizza. This was the perfect amount of food for us and allowed us to try multiple dishes.

We ordered the prosciutto pizza (with chicory!), cauliflower tortelli with brown butter and capers, and pork raviolini with black trumpet mushrooms. I liked the pork-filled pasta the best, which was interesting because I usually don’t gravitate to pork dishes. Both pasta dishes were not heavy at all, and they weren’t overwhelmed with sauce. The flavors were subtle.

The pizza was very good, and we really liked the crust. However, I wasn’t so sure about the chicory. If I were to go back, I’d try a different pizza.

For dessert, we ordered the chocolate budino with espresso caramel cream and sea salt, which was the perfect end to our meal. I love the sea salt and caramel combination. The dessert wasn’t too rich or heavy.

Overall, we very much enjoyed our dinner at Flour + Water. We would return without hesitation and would recommend it to others. It’s hard for any restaurant to live up to such high expectations, but I think the accolades are deserved.

We Found Our Favorite Coffee Shop

We first noticed Sambalatte after eating lunch at the nearby Gordon Biersch. We’re always looking for good coffee shops, so we figured we’d stop in for a quick coffee.

But there is no such thing as a quick cup of coffee at Sambalatte. And that’s what makes it great.

Instead of grabbing a quick, been-sitting-around-all-day-on-the-burner cup of coffee, we enjoyed freshly-ground pour-over coffee, listened to live music, and enjoyed some delicious little desserts.

This is a cafe where people actually hang out, talk, read, relax. You don’t see many people here getting their coffee to-go. This is a gathering place.

Despite the fact that this is a pretty sophisticated coffee shop, my daughter loves it (probably because I let her pick a few treats from the dessert case). The prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the coffee and food, and I love that most of the desserts are bite-sized, so you can try a few different things instead of ordering one large item.

As you can probably tell, Sambalatte Torrefazione gets a thumbs-up from my family. Highly recommend!

Sambalatte is located in Summerlin, at Rampart and Charleston:

750 S. Rampart Blvd, Suite 9
Las Vegas, NV 89145

WanderFood Wednesday: Hash House A Go Go

Hash House A Go Go. Las Vegas

If you’ve heard of Hash House A Go Go, it might be thanks to an episode of Man Vs. Food in which Adam tries the fried chicken benedict and the stuffed breakfast burger. The fact that this restaurant was featured on the show should tell you something about the portion sizes. Of course, they’re enormous. We’re talking pancakes the size of a medium pizza.

During our recent visit to Hash House, I ordered the Basic Breakfast, which consisted of potatoes, two eggs, a huge biscuit, bacon, and fruit. The eggs and fruit were nothing special, but the biscuit was delicious as were the potatoes (and I’m usually not a fan of breakfast potatoes).

Hash House A Go Go. Las Vegas

My husband orderd the blueberry pecan pancake, and I tried a bite. It was outstanding. I liked that they didn’t overdue it on the quantity of blueberries and pecans.

The atmosphere of this restaurant is definitely fun and family-friendly. The service is friendly and quick. I also loved the fun music that played during our meal, everything from Lady Gaga to Tony! Toni! Toné! to Tom Jones. In fact, my daughter and I might have had a little dance party in the girls bathroom as we were washing our hands. Maybe.

Two Great Thai Restaurants in Las Vegas

Leave it to me to go on a Thai food quest within our first few weeks of living in Las Vegas.

First, we tried the well-known Lotus of Siam. Located in a totally unglamorous strip mall north of the Strip, this restaurant offers great Thai food in a casual environment. I’ll admit I was a little skeptical when we pulled into the parking lot and saw that it was located next to an abandoned wig shop. However, I knew we would be in for a good meal when we saw a full dining room. The prices are very reasonable, and we loved that this is the kind of place we can take our four-year-old daughter. Call ahead to make a reservation for dinner or be prepared to wait for a table. They also offer carry-out.

Our other Thai food adventure came in the form of carry-out from Archi’s Thai Cafe, located on Sahara Ave. west of downtown. The food was outstanding! I ordered the red curry with tofu, and I’ve been daydreaming about having it again all week.

Carry-out from Archi's Thai Cafe.

Both options are kid-friendly, but do not offer a kids menu, which is actually a selling point in my book. If we’re going to go to a Thai restaurant, I want my daughter to eat Thai food, not chicken fingers or some other typical kids item.

WanderFood Wednesday: Our First Visit to Yum Thai

Pad Gai Prik Khing with tofu. Yum Thai.

When I saw that a new Thai restaurant had opened near our house, I knew we’d have to try it as soon as possible. Although we’ve enjoyed a few Thai meals here in San Antonio, we’ve had trouble finding a favorite Thai place in our part of town (northwest San Antonio).

Yum Thai is located in a strip mall, and it doesn’t look like much from the outside. However, we enjoyed our lunch so much that we returned the following week! (And, I have a feeling it will be my new go-to for carry-out when I don’t feel like cooking.)

I ordered the Pad Gai Prik Khing, which consisted of green beans and tofu stir fried in a sweet chili paste with kaffir lime leaves and ginger. I loved the way the tofu was prepared. It wasn’t spongy at all, and the green beans were crisp, not overcooked.

Although Yum Thai offers a variety of kids meals, E. ate as much of my dish as she did of her own fried rice.

Yum Thai is located in the Alamo Ranch Shopping Center:
5511 NW Loop 1604 Suite #115
San Antonio, TX 78253

WanderFood Wednesday: Cantonese and Szechwan Cuisine at Shanghai Lilly

I have a confession. Sometimes we go to restaurants that are not particularly kid-friendly…and we bring our kid. We often walk to our table while receiving skeptical looks from other diners. And we’re cool with that. We know our daughter, and we know that if we come prepared with something to keep her occupied while we wait for our food, she’ll be just fine.

We also know that she’s an adventurous eater for her age. I can’t tell you how many waitresses have looked on in disbelief as E. has gobbled up Chicken Tikka Masala or excitedly declared, “YES! Mushrooms! Yum!” upon seeing her food.

During our recent trip to Las Vegas, we ate at Shanghai Lilly at Mandalay Bay. We went early to avoid crowds. This is not a restaurant that typically caters to families; no kids’ menu here!

Dinner at Shanghai Lilly. Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas.

We shared three dishes: honey sesame chicken, kung pao chicken, and tofu and vegetables.

E. loved the kung pao chicken (which I wish had been spicier) and the tofu and vegetables.

WanderFood Wednesday: BBQ Pork Nachos

It’s been an action-packed summer for our family! Boston, St. Louis, Houston, and the Smokies…I’m still catching my breath. As I sit here trying to think about all of the interesting things I’ve eaten lately, the one I keep coming back to is this: (and it can be found right here in San Antonio)

BBQ Pork Nachos. Brannon's Cafe. Westin La Cantera.

These are the BBQ Pork Nachos from Brannon’s Cafe at the Westin La Cantera. They may look like your standard nachos, but there’s one major difference (besides the tender, delicious pork). Those green things are candied jalapenos. I love the sweet-and-savory combo.

I haven’t tried making my own candied jalapenos yet, but I might give it a try. I’m envisioning them on top of a bagel and cream cheese or as a delicious pizza topping.

Possibly the Prettiest Cupcakes You’ve Ever Seen

Cupcakes from Cupcake Couture. San Antonio, TX

I know what you’re thinking.

Yes, they taste just as good as they look!

I wanted to thank my friend for watching our dog while we were out of town, so I bought her some cupcakes from Cupcake Couture. Of course, my daughter and I had to go back (twice) to get more cupcakes and do further research for this post!

The cupcakes in the picture are: white wedding (white cake with buttercream frosting, strawberry filling, and chocolate shavings), red velvet, carrot cake, and chocolate confetti.

I have also tried the strawberry cupcake, and I think it’s my favorite. It consists of strawberry cake with white frosting, chocolate drizzle, and a fresh strawberry on top. Yum!

Cupcake Couture has two locations in San Antonio:

11851 Bandera Road #122
Helotes, TX 78203
210-695-5115

4710 Broadway Street
Alamo Heights, TX 78209

Feel Free to Steal This Idea Next Year: Father’s Day at Roaring Fork

I knew I wanted to take my husband out to dinner to celebrate Father’s Day, but I wasn’t sure which restaurant to choose. I wanted to go somewhere we hadn’t eaten before, but I also hoped to find a restaurant that he’d definitely like. In other words, different but dependable.

The dinner menu at Roaring Fork, located north of San Antonio, looked perfect. They serve American/Tex-Mex food with a twist. For instance, I ordered a huckleberry margarita. Although I’m glad I tried it, I think I would have preferred a beer!

For dinner, I ordered the Roaring Fork “Big Ass” Burger. (And I deserve an award for saying “big ass” because now I’m going to be plagued by all kinds of weird comments from people who googled “big ass” and somehow ended up here. But I digress.)

Father's Day at Roaring Fork, San Antonio

The burger was indeed big, as you can see. It was also delicious.

My husband ordered the beef short rib tacos, which he said were good. (And I take his word for it since he ate every bite.)

Overall, Roaring Fork was a great choice for Father’s Day, and I have a feeling we’ll be back before next June.

Lemon and Ricotta Pancakes at The Grove

Meyer Lemon and Ricotta pancakes at The Grove, Houston

We recently spent an awesome 24 hours in Houston, a city I’m convinced is underrated when it comes to family fun. (I’ll be sharing more about our Houston trip next week.) One of the highlights of the trip was Sunday brunch at The Grove, a restaurant right beside Houston’s lovely Discovery Green.

There are few things I love more than good food. I really enjoyed the Meyer Lemon and Ricotta pancakes, while my daughter ate one of the prettiest fruit plates I’d ever seen (plus a side of bacon…that piece you see in the picture above was a piece I stole from her plate!) My husband ordered the breakfast tacos and is already talking about a return trip to Houston so that he can try some of the other brunch items at The Grove.

The Grove is located at:
1611 Lamar Street, Houston, Texas 77010
