Photo Friday: a bridge

The Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge overlooks Hoover Dam and crosses the state line between Arizona and Nevada. The bridge honors two men: Mike O’Callaghan, who served as Governor of Nevada from 1971-1979, and Pat Tillman, an NFL player who joined the Army and was killed in Afghanistan in 2004.

The bridge provides a stunning view of Hoover Dam

These photos don’t do the bridge justice. Looking at it from Hoover Dam, the bridge soars to an impressive height of 880 feet above the river and 280 feet above the dam. It is beautiful in form, function, and significance.

No matter what your plans are this Memorial Day weekend, I hope you will take a few moments to think about those who have served our country.

Photo Friday: pretty yellow flowers at the Henderson Bird Preserve

Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. Henderson, Nevada

I’m sure that there are people out there who absolutely love the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. They probably wake up early, arriving at the park before the desert heat sets in. Armed with their field guides and binoculars, they are able to see and identify a vast array of feathered wonders.

However, we did not have such a successful trip to the preserve.

We went in the heat of the afternoon, despite the fact that the preserve opens quite early. That was our first mistake. We hadn’t walked far before our daughter started complaining about being hot and tired. And to be quite honest, we don’t know much about birds. But hey, we wanted to give it a try and explore someplace new. It might not have been our most exciting outing in Las Vegas, but I’m glad we went even for a short time.

My favorite part of the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve was the collection of beautiful trees draped in yellow flowers that met us at the entrance.

Photo Friday: Malibu

Last weekend, we went to LA to see the Cubs play the Dodgers (see? I told you we love our Cubs!) On Sunday, before heading home to Las Vegas, we took a detour up to Malibu.

We took in the beautiful views:

Played in the waves:

And buried our toes in the sand:

It was a great way to end the weekend…and to console ourselves after the Cubs lost their game.

Photo Friday: First Bowl of Miso Soup

20120126-214732.jpg

My daughter is a pretty adventurous eater, but there’s one thing she’s never really enjoyed: soup. No chicken noodle soup when she’s sick or creamy potato soup on a cold day. She doesn’t want anything to do with it…

Unless it’s miso soup. She became a fan, thanks to Hokkaido restaurant in Las Vegas.

It took a little convincing, but she finally tried it. Maybe her bravery had something to do with the knife-wielding teppanyaki chef. Who knows! I’m just glad we have another item to add to her eating repertoire.

Photo Friday: Hoover Dam

Recently, we embarked on our first day trip from Las Vegas. I was excited to see this piece of American history, although my four-year-old daughter was bored to tears (literally).

Hoover Dam. Nov 2011.

Hoover Dam

Art Deco design elements can be found everywhere you look when you visit Hoover Dam. The pair of bronze sculptures, called the “Winged Figures of the Republic,” help make the dam more than just an engineering marvel. Perhaps the sculptures were meant to serve as a reminder of both the accomplishment of building the dam and of the lives lost during construction.

We also had the opportunity to see the relatively new Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, which soars 900 feet above the Colorado River. We actually drove over this bridge during our move to Las Vegas. Walls prevent drivers from seeing Hoover Dam, but a pedestrian-only lane is available, which provides spectacular views. (Or so I imagine. We didn’t venture up to the bridge on this visit…mostly because it looks terrifying!)

Looking the other direction from Hoover Dam, visitors can see Lake Meade, America’s largest man-made reservoir. Water levels have been uncharacteristically low in recent years, as you can see by the line on the surrounding rocks. This is actually very worrisome, since most of the water used by the city of Las Vegas comes from Lake Meade.

I was prepared to be amazed by the size of the dam, but I was surprised by the fascinating art and the stunning views.

Photo Friday: Art, Isolation, and Alien Abductions in West Texas

Prada Marfa. West Texas.

Prada Marfa is an art installation by Minimalist artists/architects/sculptors Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset. The name Prada Marfa isn’t entirely accurate, since it isn’t located in Marfa, but about 30 miles away near the tiny town of Valentine, Texas.

In other words, it’s in the middle of nowhere.

View from Prada Marfa. Middle of Nowhere, West Texas.

See what I mean? The middle of nowhere!

If you haven’t figured it out by now, this isn’t a functioning boutique. In fact, the front door doesn’t even open. If you look inside the large windows, you can see several Prada shoes and purses neatly arranged on shelves and pedestals.

As I sit here doing a little research for this post, I’m finding some pretty comical things that have been written about Prada Marfa. For instance, I’ve found accounts from locals claiming they drove out on Route 90 to see it, but that it had disappeared.

And, of course, there are rumors involving aliens. Perhaps this is their way of luring us to an isolated area so that we can be abducted.

I assure you that as of March 2011, it was there! I saw it with my own eyes. My friend @flutiemcd saw it too! As far as I know, we were not abducted by aliens.

To find Prada Marfa, take US Route 90 west past Valentine. Or you can ask a Marfa local, and they’ll be able to give you directions.

Photo Friday: Ostrich Adventures at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch

It’s hard to enjoy nature when it’s so miserably hot, but we managed to have some air-conditioned fun at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch. Although my daughter’s favorite moments were watching the zebra eat a snack near our car and feeding the baby goats, I particularly liked this gal:

Ostrich. Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch.

Believe it or not, this marks the second time I’ve talked about ostriches on this blog. Go figure!

Photo Friday: Stopping to Smell the Roses in Houston

Stop and smell the roses, Houston

E. stopped to smell the roses in Houston. Even though this was a very quick trip (about 24 hours), we managed to pack a lot of fun into a short amount of time. We even had an opportunity to stop and relax at the Garden Center, located near Houston’s Museum of Natural Science. I love unplanned additions to the itinerary!
