Exploring St. Louis with kids

Gateway Arch, St. Louis

St. Louis might be one of the most underrated family destinations in the U.S. With world-class museums, professional sports for every season, and a stunning monument to 20th-century design and engineering, St. Louis offers families a host of affordable entertainment options.

Where to Begin: the Gateway Arch

Perhaps the best place to start a St. Louis adventure is the famous Gateway Arch. At 630 feet, this monument’s grace ascent gives the city a skyline like no other. Visitors can experience the Museum of Westward Expansion before climbing into a pod-shaped elevator and making the journey to the top of the Arch. There, visitors can look out the small windows and see the city to the west and the Mississippi River and Illinois to the east.

Educational Adventures

No trip to St. Louis is complete without a visit to the zoo. The Saint Louis Zoo features over 19,000 animals, a zoo train, and a lively sea lion show. Surprisingly, admission to the zoo is free. Visit soon to see the zoo’s newest resident, a baby Asian elephant that was born in April 2013.

Another free option in Forest Park is the Saint Louis Art Museum. From ancient Egyptian artifacts to paintings by modern masters like Paul Cezanne, Georges Braque, and Andy Warhol, the museum’s comprehensive collection can help inspire young artists and their parents.

For families who prefer science to Cezanne, the Saint Louis Science Center is a fun and educational option. Cross the pedestrian walkway and watch the cars zip by on the highway below, or watch a movie on the five-story screen at the OMNIMAX theater.

In addition to its impressive museums, St. Louis also boasts a well-deserved reputation as a sports town. During warm summer nights, families can take in a Cardinals baseball game at the 2006-reincarnation of Busch Stadium.

Relax and Refuel

Once you’ve experienced the art, culture, wildlife, and sports of St. Louis, you’ll need to recharge with something scrumptious. Fans of Italian food should visit “the Hill,” a predominately Italian-American neighborhood known for its wide array of old-school Italian restaurants. Local favorites include Cunetto’s House of Pasta and Charlie Gitto’s.

After dinner, consider a stop at the St. Louis staple Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. Known for their so-thick-you-can-turn-the-cup-upside-down “concretes,” this ice cream shop is a must-visit for kids (and their parents) who have a sweet tooth.

St. Louis is a fantastic budget-friendly summer destination for families. We have visited many, many times, and we always find new things to try.

Holiday Round-Up: Our Favorite Christmas Adventures

Merry Christmas, Alamo! With Christmas quickly approaching, I started looking back at past holiday-themed posts here on Wandering Off. This is such a fun time of year for families with the colorful lights, special Christmas treats, visits to see Santa, and of course holiday travel.

Here’s a quick collection of past holiday posts:

My 7 Links: A Look Back at Wandering Off

Franklin Park flowers

A community-building excercise was started by Tripbase to help travel bloggers connect and rediscover previous blog posts. Basically, we’re supposed to pick one of our own posts for each of the seven categories, and then nominate five other bloggers who we would like to see participate. (For rules and a more thorough explanation, click here.)

Thank you to Livin on the Road for nominating me!

Here are my seven links:

Beautiful:
Photo Friday: Franklin Park Conservatory
This is probably the most visually-striking post I’ve ever published. I love the bright colors of the Dale Chihuly glass next to the green leaves. Add to that some flowers, butterflies, and a two-year-old girl, and you’ve got all kinds of beauty!

Popular:
My Favorite San Antonio Playgrounds
This post has gotten more hits than any other, and I love that it helped me to discover some new parks through the suggestions made in the comments section and on Twitter.

Controversial:
Why the Idea of Full Body Scanners Makes This Mom Uncomfortable
I’m certainly not the most controversial blogger, but this post seemed to get some strong reactions, not so much in the comments section, but on Twitter. In the post, I said I’d be hesitant to fly if it meant that these new regulations would be applied to children. In fact, our next two trips after I wrote this post were road trips. However, we did go back to flying, and my husband was selected to go through the full body scanner. I think my feelings on the topic have changed somewhat, but I still stand by the fact that we need to be cautious about new regulations until we know exactly how they will effect children.

Helpful:
Air Sickness: A Survival Guide for Parents
We were really taken off-guard when our daughter got air sick on a flight. She’d never had a problem before, so my husband and I just sat there in shock. Writing this post was helpful for me because it put my mind at ease to think about the things we could do differently next time. I hope others find it helpful as well.

Success That Surprised Me:
Your Someday Might Be Today
I wrote this post in a fit of frustration and clicked publish without second-guessing myself. I was suprised that other people seemed to have similar frustrations and agreed with me that it’s more important to get out of the house and find a little adventure than it is to have a perfectly clean home or have dinner waiting on the table. If there’s one post on this list that you read, I hope it’s this one.

Needs Attention:
Outings with Your Future Architect
A post that didn’t get the attention I thought it deserved was this one on teaching your child to appreciate architecture. Sometimes I don’t think we give kids enough credit…they’re capable of appreciating art, history, and architecture if they have a little guidance. And San Antonio has some amazing buildings to explore.

A Post I’m Proud Of:
Photo Essay: West Texas
I’m proud of this post for two reasons: first, I’m pleased with the way the pictures came out. But more importantly, I’m proud of myself, my daughter, and our friends for embarking on this trip. We didn’t know what to expect. We travelled through remote areas and hiked in a national park where bears and mountain lions are common. Girl power!

I’d like to nominate the following five bloggers to take part in the My 7 Links challenge:

We need to get our kids outdoors as much as possible. As a mom, I’m trying to do better: less screen-time, more outdoor time.

Meeting Other Bloggers: Guess What? We Actually Had Stuff to Talk About!

Prior to this summer, I’d never met any of my blogging friends. The authors of all of those great posts and hilarious tweets seemed a little unreal to me. There are real people behind those words, right? I’m pleased to say that the answer is yes! And they’re just as nice in-person as they are online.

First, I met Jen from Two Kids and a Map. She and her family were visiting San Antonio, so we decided to hang out at the Guenther House. We talked about blogs, kids, and travel. I had a great time chatting with her and hope to see her again soon!

Then I met a flurry of Texas bloggers at SeaWorld’s #wildside event. Not only was this a wonderful way for me to meet other bloggers, E. got to do some pretty cool stuff too. She saw the dolphins up-close and had the opportunity to pet a wallaby. She even danced in a conga line with two of SeaWorld’s mascots, Pete and Penny.

For me, the best part about #wildside was meeting a few of my favorite San Antonio bloggers, Stacy of Kids Stuff World, Colleen of Baby Potential, and Debi from San Antonio Busy Kids. They are so nice. Seriously. And smart. Now, hurry up and visit their blogs!

There are so many bloggers out there who I’d love to meet. You know who you are. If you’re ever in San Antonio, let me know!

Disclaimer: SeaWorld invited me to the #wildside event, and I received free admission to SeaWorld and some free food. All opinions are my own, and SeaWorld did not ask me to write this post.
