Happy Hour Drinks and Snacks at T-Bones Chophouse

Nightlife in Las Vegas can be a little overwhelming, especially for people like my husband and me who would rather have a quiet drink and some good food rather than go to one of the more…how shall I say this?…over-the-top(less) clubs and bars that fill Sin City. However, we recently discovered T-Bones Chophouse and Lounge, which is just our speed.

Comfy couches and a fire/fountain contraption

Fire, water, and plenty of comfy seating

I first went to the lounge for a tweet-up prior to the 2012 Blogalicious conference. Sitting outside by the fire on one of the comfy couches, I knew I would return sometime with my husband.

Sure enough, it was only a few days later when we went to T-Bones for their happy hour (Sun-Thurs). We didn’t want a big meal, just a few snacks and a drink or two.

We started our late-afternoon inside at the bar. The bartender recommended the Peach Palmer, which was fantastic! Not too sweet and with a hint of tea flavor, this is a perfect summer or early-fall drink for those who want something light and refreshing.

We also ordered two items from the Happy Hour menu: beef sliders and the cheese plate.

After devouring our food, we headed outside to the lounge area. Sitting on the couches near the fire with the beautiful Red Rock pool within easy gazing distance, we enjoyed a couple more drinks, including a Twisted Margarita. Tart with a hint of pineapple, this drink is perfect for those who want to venture beyond the traditional beverage.

Overall, we had a nice time at T-Bones Chophouse and Lounge. I have a feeling we’ll be back again the next time we have an opportunity to enjoy a parent’s night out.

Tips for travelling (and relocating) with your dog

This is Rooney.

He is one unique dog. Right after we adopted him about three years ago, he became very ill. For a while, I wasn’t sure if the poor guy would make it. Luckily, he made a full recovery. But then our neighbors in San Antonio decided to set off fireworks until 1 a.m., making Rooney terrified to venture outside, even if we offered him treats, went out with him…you name it, we tried it. The poor dog just did not want to go outdoors.

Fast-forward two years to last fall. We were trying to plan our move to Las Vegas. We had all kinds of things to worry about, but one of our concerns was how Rooney would deal with the move. Because of his rough start with us, he has never been an adventurous dog. Everything and everyone makes him nervous, with the exception of our immediate family. How would he handle adjusting to a new home? And how on earth would we get him from Point A to Point B?

Here are some tips that we learned along the way when travelling with our dog from San Antonio to Las Vegas. Things went surprisingly well (and I’m pleased to say that Rooney has adjusted just fine to his new home).

1. Research hotels: Under normal circumstances, if you were driving from San Antonio to Vegas, you could drive until you’d had enough and then worry about finding a place to stay. However, travelling with a dog requires extra planning. It seems like every hotel has a different policy regarding pets: some don’t allow pets at all, some allow dogs under 50 lbs., others require a deposit, and a few allow dogs of any size without a pet deposit or extra fees. Research and book hotels ahead of time so that you won’t be stuck without a place to stay.

2. Buy a portable travel kennel: I know some people don’t believe dogs should be crated at night. However, we were glad we’d gotten a fold-up, lightweight travel kennel for Rooney to use when we stayed in hotels along our route. Since he is a nervous dog, I think it gave him a sense of security to have his own little spot to sleep at night. It also ensured that he wouldn’t destroy the hotel room. You never know what dogs will do when they get nervous or are in unfamiliar surroundings.

3. Have a plan for the car ride: When going on a road trip with your pet, it’s important to make sure the dog can’t bound around the entire car. Not only is this unsafe for the dog, it can also distract the driver. There are all kinds of fancy contraptions you can buy at pet stores to keep your dog in the backseat: there are seat belts, harnesses, and even mesh nets that block off the back seat from the front of the car without obstructing the driver’s view. For us, we were able to put Rooney in the back of our SUV and raise the headrests in the back seat. He wasn’t able to jump over the seat, yet he had lots of room for the long drive.

4. Consider extra costs: Travelling with your pet will add some additional costs to your trip. Fees and pet deposits at hotels, boarding fees if you are in a situation where you can’t find a pet-friendly hotel, extra immunizations that might be required before your trip…all of these expenses add up. Plan accordingly!

5. Allow extra time to get to your destination: Travelling with a pet is a bit like travelling with a small child. You’ll have to make frequent stops that you might have skipped otherwise. Don’t rush things in an attempt to have an extra day or two at your destination (or to get to your new hometown faster, if you’re moving). The journey is part of the fun, so enjoy it!

Have you travelled or relocated to a new state with your pet? Have any tips you’d like to add?

Our Last San Antonio Adventure: A Stay at the Omni La Mansión del Rio

I had been wanting to stay at the Omni La Mansión del Rio ever since we first enjoyed brunch there. The food and service were always excellent, so I had a feeling a stay at this river walk hotel would be just as wonderful.

When we started looking for a San Antonio hotel, I did a fair amount of research considering we’d lived in the area for almost three years. I was surprised how reasonable the rates at the Omni La Mansión del Rio were compared to other nearby hotels.

Our stay started off with the same kind of excellent service that we’d experienced when we’d gone to the Omni for brunch. The moment my daughter stepped out of the car, she received an Omni kids pack that included a magnifying glass, frisbee, and some small toys in a cute little backpack. She was thrilled…which meant I was thrilled too.

There were several things I liked about our stay at the Omni:

Location: Sure, the riverwalk might be a little touristy, but it really is pleasant when it isn’t too crowded. Plus, a riverwalk hotel allows you to be within easy walking distance of restaurants, bars, shops, and the lauching point for the river cruises.

Outstanding Food: As I said, I love brunch at the Omni La Mansión del Rio, but during our stay we got to experience dinner there instead. The service was impeccable. Although everything was wonderful, the appetizer is what really stood out to me. It consisted of three cheese puffs accompanied by sweet bell pepper coulis: one filled with zucchini and mint, the second with gruyère and comté, and the third with brie and sun dried tomato.

Cozy Room: I loved the room’s unique design. It definitely had a San Antonio flare that you don’t find at all hotels. It was warm and inviting, not stuffy or pretentious. Take a look:

Room Service Coffee: One thing I like about Omni hotels in general is that members of their select guest program (you can sign up for free when you make your reservation) receive complimentary morning beverages like coffee or juice. I’m hopelessly addicted to caffeine, so I like being able to have a coffee delivered to my room first thing instead of having to leave the hotel in search of a Starbucks.

Even though we liked this hotel, it might not work for every family. The rooms were descent-sized, but not huge. I could see this being a problem for larger families. Although the room could sleep four people, I think a family of four or more would feel confined in a standard room. Also, the pool is very peaceful and pleasant…perfect for those travelling without kids. However, the pool area didn’t have the kid-friendly vibe that you find at many hotels and resorts these days.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay.

Note: All opinions are my own. I was not asked to write this post, nor was I compensated in any way.

A Huge Bathroom and Other Tales From Our First Week in Vegas

I knew the JW Marriott–Las Vegas would be nice, but my goodness. I wasn’t prepared when we walked into our enormous, beautifully-decorated room. And that was nothing compared to the huge, marble-covered bathroom. This picture doesn’t even do it justice!

See? That look on my face is saying, “Heck yeah! I got a very reasonable off-season rate, and by the way, I’m in VEGAS, BABY!”

What else can I tell you about our Sin City experiences so far? Well, they have video poker at the grocery store, the barista looked at me funny today when I said “super-duper,” and my new favorite pastime is staring at the mountains when I’m out-and-about.

We’re finally in our house and trying to get settled. I got to sleep in my own bed last night for the first time in weeks, and life is good.
