Holiday Round-Up: Our Favorite Christmas Adventures

Merry Christmas, Alamo! With Christmas quickly approaching, I started looking back at past holiday-themed posts here on Wandering Off. This is such a fun time of year for families with the colorful lights, special Christmas treats, visits to see Santa, and of course holiday travel.

Here’s a quick collection of past holiday posts:

Tips for Visiting the Magical Forest at Opportunity Village

Christmas in July: A Holiday-Themed Hotel in Pigeon Forge

Now I’m turning it over to you: what is your favorite Christmas adventure that you’ve enjoyed with your kids?

Tips for Visiting the Magical Forest at Opportunity Village

Each year, Opportunity Village puts on a huge holiday celebration called the Magical Forest. Visitors will find millions of twinkly Christmas lights, a train, funnel cake, a carousel, and other fun activities.

This was our first time visiting the Magical Forest. Based on the large crowds, I assume this is a popular holiday tradition for many Las Vegas families. Here are some tips to make your experience even more enjoyable:

Buy tickets ahead of time or be prepared to wait in line. You can buy tickets online or at local CVS Pharmacies. We didn’t plan ahead, so we had to wait in the ticket line. Luckily, they had six or seven ticket windows open and the line moved at a good pace. But who wants to stand in line when you could be eating funnel cake?

When purchasing tickets, consider the passport option. The passport tickets include unlimited rides. Purchased individually, ride tickets cost $1 each and most rides require 2-3 tickets. The passport option is a good bet if you plan on taking the train or riding the carousel more than once.

–Speaking of money, remember that it goes to a good cause…buy that popcorn, hot chocolate, and funnel cake!

The line for the train might be long, so consider arming yourself with snacks before you start waiting.

Have your camera ready for your walk through the Christmas lights. Our favorite display was the Blue Man Group’s interactive musical tree.

Bundle up. It might not seem that cold at first, but once you’re out there for an hour or two, you’ll be glad you’ve got your hat and gloves. If you’re visiting from out of town, you might be surprised how chilly it gets in Las Vegas in winter!

Christmas in July: Our Visit to a Holiday-Themed Hotel in Pigeon Forge

During our recent girls-only adventure to the Smoky Mountains, we stayed at a Christmas-themed hotel called The Inn at Christmas Place. It was such a blast! Every inch of the hotel is decorated as if it were December, and Santa makes special appearances at the hotel several times per week.

Our room included it’s own little Christmas tree, not to mention a balcony overlooking a pond and the garden.

Glockenspiel. Inn at Christmas Place. Pigeon Forge.
The glockenspiel was hand-carved in Germany and rings at the top of every hour until 9 p.m.

You won’t miss the Inn. It’s located on US 441, the main street through Pigeon Forge. Just look for the sign…and the huge Tudor-style building!

We ate breakfast outside on the patio, and the girls enjoyed exploring the garden while my friend and I finished our coffee.

We enjoyed our stay, and this was a great location from which to explore the national park and Gatlinburg. I recommend it, especially to families travelling with children.

The Westin Brings Winter to San Antonio

For the most part, I don’t miss Midwestern winters. I can totally do without the treacherous roads, grey skies, and the coat-scarf-gloves-hat combo.

The one time I do miss experiencing a “real” winter is around the holidays. It’s a little sad when there’s no prospect of a white Christmas.

That’s why I was so thrilled to be invited to a preview of Westin La Cantera’s Hill Country Holidays. Open to both hotel guests and the general public, the resort is making Christmas seem a little more wintery in San Antonio.

Hill Country Holidays features an outdoor ice rink (yes, you read that correctly), a North Pole kids area, daily storytime sessions in the resort’s cozy library, and lots of cold-weather treats and beverages.

Hill Country Holidays will feature an outdoor skating rink. Open daily, $10 for 45 mins. of skating.

Proceeds from these winter activities go to a good cause, the Carver Academy, an inner-city school founded by NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson.

What could be better? Winter fun, good food, and the knowledge that you’re helping local kids in the process. Remember, you don’t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy these activities, which are open to the public now through January 8, 2011. (Although, you might want to consider a quick weekend escape to this resort. The grounds and pool area are gorgeous!)

For more information on Hill Country Holidays, follow the Westin La Cantera on Twitter or “like” the resort on Facebook.

E. had so much fun at the North Pole kids area that she didn’t want to leave.

And when you visit Hill Country Holidays, don’t forget to bring a gift for Toys for Tots! Drop-off boxes will become available on December 1.

Note: I was invited to the Hill Country Holidays event, but I was not asked to write a blog post. My daughter stayed at the kids area for free, but I was not compensated in any other way. Well, ok. There was hot chocolate. And some bread pudding. But otherwise, I wasn’t compensated. All opinions are my own.

Red and Gruene

011 (2)

Shortly before Christmas, we decided not to take E. to see Santa at the mall. Why deal with the crowds? And for that matter, why have our daughter’s picture taken among a bunch of over-priced clothing stores when we could visit Santa somewhere much more pleasant: Gruene, Texas.

So, we set out for the small town of Gruene, where Cowboy Kringle was waiting between the general store and the wine shop. Of course, E. was terrified of the older gentleman with the white beard, but we did get a good picture and will always have pleasant memories of our afternoon in Gruene.

After our visit with Santa, we walked around town and I took lots of pictures of historical markers and old buildings. At one point, E. looked at me as I was taking pictures of a marker and said, “Come on, Mama! It’s just a sign.”

We ate dinner at the Gristmill, which we enjoyed. The setting definitely feels like Texas. We sat next to a large fireplace that had a steer’s head mounted above it.

I love places like this that haven’t been infiltrated by standardized stores and restaurants. It’s such a happy place, especially during the holiday season.

Texas Photo: Fredericksburg’s Christmas Pyramid

Wooden Christmas pyramids like this one are a German tradition. This particular pyramid was handcarved in Germany and now sits in Fredericksburg, Texas in the town’s Marktplatz near Vereins Kirche. At 26 feet, this is the tallest Christmas pyramid in the United States.
