We’re going through boxes this week as we prepare to move to Las Vegas. I’ve come across all kinds of items I’d forgotten about, and many of them have to do with travel.
I found the ring that I bought in Rome when I was 21 years old. I’m now wearing it on a daily basis after neglecting it for several years.
I found the complimentary luggage tag that we were given at the Keio Plaza Hotel in Tokyo when we travelled there in 2004.
I found the black bear toy that I bought for my daughter when we went to the Smokies this summer, and I found my favorite pair of jeans that have travelled with me countless times and are tattered to the point that they aren’t acceptable to wear in public.
And then there’s the scorpion lollypop that I bought in Marfa, Texas. Yes, that’s a real scorpion in there. No, I don’t plan on eating it.
We’ve never spent much money on souvenirs because it’s the little things–the complimentary luggage tags, the receipts written in German, the $10 t-shirts–that have always brought back the fondest memories.
What kinds of souvenirs do you collect when you travel?

First, by today’s standards those jeans are more than acceptable to wear (barring formal tea or something like that).
I’m happy with hotel keys and pictures for my souvenirs. My kids, on the other hand, have far more expensive tastes. Once per state they are allowed to make Build-A-Bear’s, after that they usually want a stuffed animal of some sort, although my daughter is getting older now and her preferences for take home items are leaning more and more towards clothing. She’s never asked for a scorpion lollipop though.
The jeans do look pretty good in the picture, but it should be noted that there is a small hole that’s starting to form near the zipper. That’s where I draw the line!
We love to find local street art or something cheap by a local artisan or that is known in that area. We have ink drawings from Rome and screen printed cloths from Kyoto. And then of course we have a hallway full of photos we have taken on various trips. Those are my favorite souvenirs of all.
I agree! I love travel photos. They’re priceless.
I like to keep little momentos. I even have used train tickets:)
Cool! I keep ticket stubs too and sometimes even receipts. Although, we haven’t done much train travel…that’s something I know my daughter would love.
Thanks for stopping by!
this is one of my favorite posts of yours
LOVE the pic of the travelin’ jeans!
